Fear and Despair – The Genesis of Rebellion

Numbers 14:4, ‘And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”’ What happens when something you believed God for does not happen according to your timeline or in the manner that you had expected? Most of us despair, reject God’s leadership over our lives and then we go back to that old familiar crutch that we are so used to, that addiction that we use to distract our minds from our misfortune, or lift us up, or validate us. That is what the Israelites did when they were at the brink of entering the Promised Land but received a bad report from ten of the twelve spies sent out to inspect the land. They despaired and thought of going back to the land where they had been mistreated and living as slaves. They rejected God’s leadership and wanted to select their own leader to do according to their will. They had forgotten all the miracles that God had performed in display of His Might and Power to them. Isn’t that how most of us react when we are in despair...

Arrogance Leads To Death

Job 35:13, ‘The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when He fetters them, they do not cry for help.’ Are you so stiff necked, so arrogant, so steeped in your ways that you cannot hear that still small voice that calls out to you that is pleading with you to change your ways, to repent so that you will not perish. Is your heart so hardened, so dead that you cannot recognize the voice of God, the Holy Spirit trying to convict you. The arrogant are filled with resentment toward God and are not willing to hear His call and surrender to Him, to accept that they need Him in their lives, that He is their only salvation and will perish in their arrogance.

Selfish Self Love

John 12:25, 26, ‘The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.’ We need to be careful not to exhibit this world’s kind of selfish self love that tends to exalt itself above God. Loving yourself in this manner leads to disobedience and rebellion that lead to Satan’s and Adam’s fall. God does not mean that you must hate yourself but you need to hate and resist the selfish desires of that sinful carnal nature in us that desires to control us and that the Devil tries to use to tempt us into disobedience and rebellion. If we are truly followers of Christ, then we need to gain control over this carnal man/ woman in us and submit in obedience to the command of the Lord just as He did to the Father’s will even to the point of handing Himself over to and enduring a death at the cross He did not deserve....
