Forgiveness Leads To Repentance

In Romans 12:17-21 'Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.', It is hard for us to forgive because the world teaches us from a tender age that tit for tat is the order of the day. If someone wrongs you, you must avenge yourself so that you can feel better about it. Even us Christians, when we are wronged, we might not do it ourselves but we ask God to avenge on our behalf so that we can feel better. But is that why God commands us to forgive and do good to those that have wronged us which is contrary to what the world teaches and expects form us? I believe that the main reason why God commands us to forgive is that this is the only way that the person that has committed wrong can find true repentance and with repentance comes redemption and change in behaviour. The only way that you can truly forgive someone who does not deserve it is if you love that person. God gave us this same example through His forgiveness of our sins in Jesus Christ our LORD. God forgives us our sins not because we deserve it or because we asked for forgiveness but because of His abounding love for us. And therefore the same applies to us that if we truly love others, then we should be able to forgive them even when they do not deserve it.
