The power of speech

The tongue physically is the strongest human muscle. Speech can be used for either good or bad, to heal or hurt, bring freedom or bondage, show the way or mislead. Speech can also be passed down from one generation to the next. Young children pick what their parents and elders say. We need to be in control of our tongues lest they land us into trouble.

Proverbs 27:17, ‘As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.’ The society, and by extent the church today is short of men and women of character and that is why the next generation might not have real men and women because it take one to nurture one. This is the essence of mentorship, that one can only give another what he possess himself. If you as a young person want to have the qualities of integrity, maturity, kindness, courtesy, humility and peace then you cannot attain them if your mentor or role model is one who is dishonest, rude, immature, prideful and unruly, it cannot just happen. Friends also mould and shape us because we spend most of our social time with them, we ask for their input when we are faced with the dilemmas of life and so we also need to choose them wisely. Envy

Numbers 12:1, ‘Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite.’ Envy is a very dangerous and we need to be vigilant and not allow it creep into our hearts. James tell us in James 4:1,2 that our selfish desires causes us to be envious of our neighbors to the extent of coveting and killing. This is what was afflicting the brother and sister of Moses, Miriam and Aaron. They were envious of the favor and position God had given to Moses. They were lusting after that which Moses had given to Moses. As often as is the case, in order to mask that our hatred is driven or fuelled by our raw selfish desires and ambitions, we place it on something that has nothing to do with the other like tribe, race, gender, age and any other reason other than the truth that it is our envy of what this person has that is driving us towards hating them. Strength in God

Psalm 118:10-13, ‘All nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off. I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me.’ The world is full of trouble, and we are constantly under attack from the Devil who wants us to lose hope and give up on our inheritance as believers. He will use family, friends, strangers and enemies to try and put us down, persecute us, oppress us, discourage us, mislead us, tempt us so that we may lose our way and not focus on Jesus Christ who is the author and perfecter of our faith and strengthens us through everything. But in all these we should never lose our focus, keeping our eyes on the prize, shedding off all encumbrances that might prevent us from reaching our destination and completing our race by focusing on Jesus, our Lord...
