Marriage: The ordained institution

The institution called Marriage is God ordained right from the creation of the first man. The foremost reason for marriage is companionship as shown in Genesis 2:18, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him." Men and women are destined to make a life together not only for bearing kids but for being each other rock, being friends, showing each other love.

The institution of Marriage is ordained by God and hence should be broken by man. Divorce was not in God´s divine plan as shown in Genesis 2:22-24, "Then the lord god made a woman from the rib he had taken out of man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh, she shall be called woman for she was taken out of man.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh." The institution was meant to be of a life time. The two beings were to be joined and live as a single entity without contradictions. The man should cherish his wife as he does himself. She is but an extension of him. Also the most hardest part for men is the aspect of leaving our parents to be united with our wives. It does not mean abondoning your parents or shutting them out but not allowing them to interfere or take precedence in decision pertaining to our family. After all you are still your parents´ son but now you are also a husband.

The marriage institution is one where neither one of them should feel ashamed in front of their partner. We should be willing to be ourselves and allow our partners to see us at our weakest, when we are most vulnerable for us to be effectively a single unit. Don't you share your weaknesses with yourself when you do a self analysis. Only when you truly know someone can you assist them, love them, care for them. Adam and Eve, the first ordained marriage exemplifies this in Genesis 2:25, "The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame."

Marriage is sacred and whoever practices adultery both the married person and the unmarried will face God´s wrath. The unmarried who sleeps with a married person is also guilty of committing adultery. God´s feelings on the sanctity of marriage are shown in Hebrews 13:4, "Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral." This requires commitment on the part of those that enter into the union of marriage to uphold the institution faithfully. It is not easy with the temptations of today´s world but it is possible through God.

As I said earlier divorce was not in God´s original plan when He set out the marriage institution. But due to our weakness as men, God gave the only instance where divorce was applicable, that is when one found their partner was unfaithful. I believe it is because man has both an unrepentant and unforgiving heart. Jesus explained this well in Mathew 19:4-9, "Haven't you read, Jesus replied, 'that in the beginning the Creator made them male and female and said for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and the two will become one flesh? So they are no longer two but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.' 'Why then', the pharisees asked, 'did Moses command that a man give his wife certificate of divorce and send her away?' Jesus replied, 'Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marfries another woman commits adultery."(Also in Mark10:1-12).

Man is specially made in God´s image hence we are not like beasts that cannot control their passions. We have the power within to subordinate our wants to us not the other way round and the only way to do it is to use what only human have, the gift of choice. Only then will we live as God wants us to.
