The Nature of Man
Psalm 53:1-3, ‘The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt and their ways are vile; there is no-one who does good. God looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. Everyone has turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no-one who does good, not even one.’
The human nature is carnal in nature; that is to say that it is ruled by selfishness, arrogance, pride, jealousy, envy where we are more or only concerned with ‘number one’ than with the needs and feelings of others. Still unconvinced? Just look at the selfish behavior of small children that have not yet been socialized with a sense of right or wrong and you will notice that are only concerned with their own needs.
This is the sinfulness of the human nature where we justify many a great atrocities in the name of the meeting our needs or ‘rights’ as we like to call them. Some of these ‘rights’ that we say are inalienable and fundamental are simply subjective views of our selfish wants and needs that do not take into consideration the feelings of or impact on others. We should remind ourselves that although everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial.
With this nature that is self exalting, is it a wonder that we delude ourselves into thinking that there is no God, that we being as important as we are an end unto ourselves, that we are the centre of the universe and everything revolves around us. This is the nature that we inherited from Adam after his disobedience of and rebellion against God. Because of his choice to believe the word of Satan over God’s, God separated Himself from Adam leading to the death of his spirit.
But God in His divine wisdom crafted a plan for reconciliation with man that was revealed at the fullness in time through Christ on the cross, who with a single act of obedience to the Father above, has refreshed our spirit with new life, and we are now reborn into new spiritual creatures that are in the likeness of the Son, and we now as sons of God through Jesus Christ, who is the first fruit of those that live a life of obedience, can now look up to heaven to the Father, turning to Him in confidence, seeking Him earnestly because we now know the truth that has been revealed to us by the Spirit of God that lives in us, and reveals to us the edicts and commands of God in our hearts.
